Linda McCann: Civilian Conservation Corps in Iowa
Following her successful 2016 program about prohibition in Eastern Iowa, author Linda McCann returns to Cresco Public Library Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss her latest book, ‘The Civilian Conservation Corps in Northeast Iowa.’ This program takes place in the Cresco Public Library Program Room (downstairs). The Cresco Public Library is handicap-accessible.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a federal program during the 1930s, set up to assist young men with supporting their families and also to renew our natural resources. Most people know about the State Park work, but in Iowa, seven percent of the projects were soil erosion. Cresco had a CCC camp for soil erosion, and there are still dams in places that were built by the CCC. Many people have visited Pilot Knob or Backbone, which were built by the CCC. Linda has spoken with 15 men who were in the CCC and shares many of their stories. She continues to search for more men to speak with. She may be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
